Whites guide to Downton and the edge of the New Forest

Whites sell and let houses in Salisbury and surrounding villages. This includes villages on the edge of The New Forest.

Downton

Downton is a great village to live in with so much going on and the beautiful River Avon passing through it.  It has great amenities including a Co-Op, Mini Sainsburys, The delightful Borough Cafe, Tennis Club and Sport Centre, Barbers and Hairdresser, churches, pharmacy, library and doctors surgery, plus two great pubs including the popular Goat Pub, The Bull and a fish and chip shop.

It also has two schools, the popular Downton C of E Primary school and Trafalgar Secondary School.  The village also offers great riverside walks, plus football, cricket rounders and a playground for smaller children.

Usually held in late April or early May, the village hosts its traditional annual event The Cuckoo Fair.  This a fun, free and friendly day and features over 250 craft and other stalls; live music; maypole, Morris dancing and folk entertainment.

Redlynch

Redlynch is a quaint village on the edge of the New Forest.  The parish includes neighbouring settlements of Bohemia, Lover, Morgan’s Vale and Woodfalls.

Redlynch benefits from a village hall and a good pub The Kings Head.  The Kings Head is a traditional pub dating back to 1700 when it was built as a Cider House.  The pub is dog friendly and has low beams, a roaring wood burner and good food.  There is also a recreation ground with social club.

The Hale Newsagents and Post Office located in Woodfalls sells just about anything and near by you will find take away facilities located in Morgans Vale.

Lover

Known as one of the most romantic villages in the country.  Around Valentines day one can send their post there and have it stamped with a “Lover” stamp.  They also host an annual 5K running race.

Whiteparish

This village has great facilities and has a post office, surgery, two pubs The Kings Head and The Parish Lantern.  There is also a skate park and a school All Saints Primary School.   Great local community with annual fireworks display.

The village offers easy access to Romsey and is close to Mottisfont, National Trust Property.

Hale

Hale is a pretty village with a very popular primary school.  It lies on the border of the New Forest, overlooking the valley of the River Avon.

It is a scattered community with some thatched cottages around the green, a village hall, church and a Victorian school building which still houses the primary school.

Each year it hosts an annual fete.

Landford

Set on the northern tip of the New Forest this village has a good mix of houses including some chalet bungalows.  It also offers easy access to New Forest Lavender Farm, public houses, and other good to visit locations.
