Orcheston
Orcheston (pronounced or-ches-ton) is a charming, small village in the Wylye Valley and includes the hamlet of Elston. Although this is a quiet, peaceful rural village, it’s close to the A360, and both Salisbury and Warminster, with all their facilities are less than a half-hour drive away.
The River Till flows through the landscape on its way to Stapleford to join the River Wylye. At Orcheston the river is a ‘winterbourne’ – meaning it largely only flows in winter and early spring.
Although small, Orcheston has two ancient churches. St Mary’s is a peaceful church tucked away at the bottom of a single track, just as the lane opens onto Salisbury Plain with spectacular views.
There’s a Facebook page and a small village hall which hosts activities such as yoga and book clubs. The local community is a sociable one – with Raft Races and a Bonfire Night party, a summer fete and a flower festival. At Christmas the church is packed to overflowing with a Christingle and Carols service.
Former Southampton and England footballer Mick Channon was born in the village.
History
Orcheston is recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book as ‘Orcestone’ and ‘Orchestone’.
There are two ancient churches, both are Grade II listed and date from the 13th Century. St George’s is no longer used and is cared for by The Churches Conservation Trust.
Walking and cycling
Orcheston is located near the Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (National Landscape) and Salisbury Plain so surrounded by great views and walks. Here’s a four-mile walk from The Edward Thomas Fellowship from St Mary’s Church if you’d like to explore the area on foot.
