Fisherton de la Mere
Fisherton de la Mere is a very pretty, small village with a village green and stunning views, around nine miles from Warminster in the Wylye Valley, where it appears time has stood still.
Homes here are classically Wiltshire, dotted across the landscape, often thatched or flint and limestone, mostly charming and many with stunning views over the timeless landscape of the Wylye Valley. Most of the village is in a Conservation Area.
Although the village is secluded, it’s close to both the A36 and A303, so as well as accessibility to Warminster with its train station, it’s also just half-an-hour or so from the cathedral city of Salisbury with its shops, restaurants, bars, culture and heritage. The train from here to London takes less than 90 minutes.
The origins of the name are Norman and in the Domesday Book it was called ‘Fisertone’. The ‘de la Mere’, sometimes Delamere or Delamare originates from the owners of the Manor in the Middle Ages who apparently used all three spellings!
History
St Nicholas’ Church was built in the 14th Century in a chequerboard pattern of flint and stone, quite common in this area. It’s Grade II listed.
Walking and cycling
The Church of St Nicholas has wonderful views of the Wylye Valley and there are some delightful walks on the doorstep.
If you’d like to explore this area, The Churches Conservation Trust has a two-mile walk from St Nicholas’ to the Church of St Mary at the village Wylye (which has a great pub for a pitstop!).
