Wreathed in smiles

Christmas is all about warmth, joy, and making your home feel extra special.

One of the easiest ways to add some festive cheer to your doorstep is with a striking Christmas door wreath. Not only does it create a welcoming first impression for your guests, but it’s also a lovely tradition that brings a touch of nature and handmade charm to your festive décor.

Of course, you can easily buy a pre-made wreath, but we think making your own adds a personal touch that mass-produced versions can’t match. Plus, it’s a fun and creative activity that you can turn into your own festive workshop with family and friends.

You can customise your wreath to match your personal style, whether you prefer a traditional look with red berries and holly, or something more modern with gold accents and dried flowers.

And hopefully, you’ll end up with something really special that will make your front door the talk of the town!

Whites’ step-by-step guide

You will need:

  • A wreath base (you can buy a wire frame or use a foam or natural twig base)
  • Greenery (evergreens like fir, pine, holly, and ivy are ideal – pick them up from your local florist, or gather from hedgerows)
  • Floral wire or hot glue gun
  • Decorations (baubles, ribbons, pinecones, dried oranges, cinnamon sticks, etc.)
  • Scissors or pruning shears

Step 1: Start by securing your wreath base on a flat surface covered with newspaper. Wrap floral wire around the base to give it more structure, especially if you’re adding heavier decorations.

Step 2: Cut your chosen greenery into manageable lengths (around 4-6 inches). Begin attaching the greenery to the wreath base by securing the stems with floral wire. Start at one point on the wreath and work in small sections, layering the greenery slightly over each previous section to create a full, lush look. Continue adding greenery all the way around until the entire wreath is covered.

Step 3: Once you’ve created a solid base of greenery, it’s time to get creative with your decorations. Use hot glue or floral wire to add festive touches like baubles, ribbons, pinecones, or dried fruit for a more natural look. Arrange them in clusters or keep evenly spaced, depending on the look you prefer.

Step 4: Once your decorations are in place, add any final details, such as a ribbon bow for a classic look or fairy lights for a touch of sparkle.

Step 5: Use a piece of ribbon or twine to hang your wreath from your front door. Make sure it’s securely fastened, and step back to admire the result!

If you’d prefer a little expert guidance or simply want to enjoy the social side of wreath-making, why not sign up for a wreath-making workshop? There are plenty of festive wreath-making classes available across our patch this season, often providing all the materials you’ll need, from greenery to decorations. Check out local florists and garden centres offering wreath-making experiences, perfect for getting into the festive spirit.
