Sutton Mandeville and Chicksgrove
Sutton Mandeville is a pretty village, just off the A30, in the stunning Cranborne Chase Area of Oustanding Natural Beauty (National Landscape), and includes the hamlets of Lower Chicksgrove and Sutton Row.
The meandering River Nadder, pastures, meadows and chalk downlands, create the perfect backdrop for village life here.
The parish is around 12 miles from Salisbury, a drive of around 30 minutes, and less than 10 minutes to the largest of the Nadder Valley villages, Tisbury, with all its amenities and facilities including a train station.
The Compasses Inn is a 14th Century popular local pub with rooms, in Lower Chicksgrove. It’s renowned for serving simple meals done well, with a menu inspired by the seasons.
Its wine list, with a strong focus on European wines, has been created to complement its food, while its real ales are sourced locally. Think cosy, autumn nights with candles, great food, good wine and roaring fires. Not a bad line-up for your local.
History
Sutton Mandeville is first mentioned in the Domesday Book as Sudtone or South Town. It was granted to the de Mandeville family in the reign of Henry I where it derived it’s name.
Sutton passed to the Pembrokes after the Reformation, and was then sold to the Wyndham family of Dinton House, now Philipps House. The estates were put up for auction in 1917, and many of the sitting tenants bought the farms and homes.
A hundred years ago, Sutton Mandeville hosted thousands of soldiers in camps either side of today’s A30. It now has two badges: the badge of the 7th (City of London) Battalion of the London Regiment; and the Royal Warwickshire Badge.
