Pitton is home to The Silver Plough, a popular pub with excellent food, and perfectly placed for countryside walks before or after a pint of real ale.

The village also has a primary school, a well-stocked village shop and post office, a village hall, and the beautiful St Peter’s Church.

One of the highlights of the village’s social calendar is the annual Pitton Carnival, a fun-filled event that features a parade, games, stalls, and live entertainment.

History

Pitton has a long history – a skeleton unearthed on the green in 1958 was dated from the Stonehenge era. The name Pitton is thought to be derived from the Anglo-Saxon name Pitta or Putta – the Hawk. This implies that this was the place where Anglo-Saxon nobles kept their hawks, as throughout the Middle Ages Pitton was a forest village with close associations with Clarendon Palace.

Until the late 1920s, Pitton was the home of an important wagon building and wheelwright business, that was well known through the region for its fine craftsmanship.

St Peter’s Church dates from the 12th Century and was restored in the latter half of the 19th Century. A Wesleyan Methodist chapel was built in the village in 1888, which went on to become a school before being turned into two homes in 2013.

The rolling hills, ancient woodlands, and picturesque valleys that characterize the area make Pitton a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you’re a keen walker, cyclist, horse rider, there are countless opportunities to explore the local landscape.

Pitton is surrounded by a network of footpaths and bridleways, and one of the most popular walks is the Pitton Circular, a route that takes you through some of the most scenic parts of the village and its surroundings. For those looking for more challenging routes, the nearby Clarendon Way is a long-distance footpath that runs for 24 miles between Salisbury and Winchester, passing through Pitton along the way.

For mountain bikers, the nearby Bentley Wood offers a more rugged experience. This large woodland area, just a short ride from Pitton, features a network of trails that wind through dense forest.
