The Mill Arms in the neighbouring village of Dunbridge has a traditional pub menu, good Sunday roasts, and real ales on tap – it’s the perfect spot for a pint after a long countryside walk.
On the edge of the village, Holbury Lakes Trout Fishery has lakes stocked with rainbow and blue trout, with wild brown trout in the river – perfect for seasoned anglers or those wanting to try fishing for the first time.
History
Lockerley dates back to at least the medieval period, with records showing its existence as early as the 12th Century. The village was historically part of the extensive landholdings of Romsey Abbey, which held significant influence in the area until the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th Century.
The village’s rural character has been shaped by agriculture, with farming being a central part of life for centuries. The church of St John the Evangelist dates to the 12th Century and is a beautiful example of Norman architecture with a striking tower, medieval font and 14th Century wall painting.
Walking and cycling
With such easy access to beautiful countryside, Lockerley offers countless opportunities for hiking, cycling, and horseriding. The village is also close to several areas of outstanding natural beauty, including the New Forest National Park, which is just a 20-minute drive away.
