Farley

The peaceful village of Farley sits in the heart of the beautiful Wiltshire countryside, just a short drive from the cathedral city of Salisbury with all its heritage, culture and amenities.

It’s a picturesque village on the edge of the historic Clarendon Estate, with its expansive woodland and walking trails.

The historic parish church of All Saints sits at the heart of Farley, and a pretty village green is the perfect central spot for local gatherings and events.

Farley has a village hall, which is a focal point for the community, and has easy access to the amenities of nearby villages and all that Salisbury has to offer just seven miles away.

The pretty Hook and Glove pub sits at the heart of the village and is dog-friendly, making it the perfect place to stop off for a real ale after a walk through the surrounding countryside – a footpath from the pub opens directly out onto open fields.

Farley Cricket Club was founded in 1866 and plays in the Hampshire Cricket League.

History

One of the most significant historical landmarks in Farley is All Saints’ Church, built in 1688 and a fine example of 17th Century architecture. Opposite the church is Farley Hospital, a 17th Century almshouse that is still run as a charity offering eight separate almshouses.

The building was commissioned and funded by Sir Stephen Fox, who was born in Farley in 1627, and rose to become the royal administrator and courtier to King Charles II. A Great Book was started when the building was opened to record the hospital’s accounts, which is still used today.

Walking and cycling

Blackmoor Copse, an SSSI, managed as a nature reserve by the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, lies just to the east of the village.

The Copse is one of the most important woods in Wiltshire for wildlife, and you can keep an eye out for the 25 species of butterflies recorded here on the single circular route for easy walking.
