History
Coombe Bissett’s history stretches back over 1,000 years to the Domesday Book, where it is listed as part of the land owned by Wilton Abbey. The parish church of St Michael and All Angels has its origins in the 12th Century, with later additions and restorations reflecting different architectural styles.
Walking and cycling
Coombe Bissett has access to a network of footpaths and bridleways that criss-cross the Cranborne Chase National Landscape, and the village is surrounded by quiet country roads ideal for cycling. Just on the edge of the village, Coombe Bissett Down Nature Reserve is a must for walkers.
Managed by the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, this 63-hectare reserve is a beautiful area of chalk downland, home to a variety of rare plants and butterflies. There are several trails throughout the reserve, offering walks of varying lengths and difficulties. The panoramic views from the top of the down are breathtaking, making the climb well worth the effort.
