Britford
Sitting on the edge of the beautiful Avon water meadows, Britford is a small, rural village that lies within sight of Salisbury Cathedral, just two miles away from the city centre.
Britford has good amenities with a church, village hall, Longford CofE primary school and the popular Britford Farm Shop.
Longford Castle is at the southern end of the village, and there is also a trout farm at the Britford Fishery, which offers good trout and coarse fishing for members on the magnificent chalk stream river.
Salisbury District Hospital lies just a mile to the south west of the village, and a park and ride bus service to the city centre runs from a site on the A338 nearby.
History
Britford has one of the oldest Saxon churches in the country, and some interesting, listed buildings, including the 17th Century Moat House – which, as its name suggests – is surrounded by a moat, and has a dovecote in the garden. The pretty church of St Peter’s stands near the riverbank, and the tall nave survives from a substantial Saxon church of the 8th or 9th Century. Its north and south transepts were added in the 14th Century.
Walking and cycling
The village is surrounded by lots of picturesque walking routes and there is a lovely off-road path through the water meadows to the city centre.
