Seven things to see and do in Wiltshire this March
Whether you’re a local looking for something new, or just visiting, here are seven things you won’t want to miss this month. Read More
Find out moreThere’s nothing quite like a Sunday roast. Crispy roast potatoes, rich gravy, and perfectly cooked meats (or a delicious veggie alternative) – just the thought of it has our mouths watering!
With plenty of country pubs to choose from, Wiltshire has no shortage of fantastic spots for a proper Sunday feast.
Here are five of our favourites…
The Great Bustard has only been open since October 2024, but it quickly earned its spot on our list of best roasts in the area.
Around six miles from Salisbury, in the Woodford Valley, is the warm, friendly, country pub with stylish décor and great food. Expect all the trimmings, and then some. The menu includes locally-sourced ingredients, with lamb from the Great Durnford Estate and beef from a nearby farm. Even the vegetables come straight from the estate garden.
Before you get to the main event, there’s small plates of hare and duck liver terrine, or house smoked trout (fresh from the chalk streams) to start. And when it comes to puddings, your options are traditional indulgence – bread & butter pudding, chocolate mousse with chocolate brownie and sticky toffee pudding.
Located in Salisbury on Butcher’s Row, the Grade II listed Ox Row Inn dates back to the 16th Century. A roaring fire creates a cosy atmosphere in winter, while the outdoor seating overlooking the Market Place is ideal for people watching on sunny Sundays.
The Sunday lunch menu offers sirloin of beef, pork belly porchetta, lamb shoulder, roast corn-fed chicken, or a squash and feta pithivier. Can’t decide? Opt for a duo of meats. Every roast is served with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables and plenty of gravy.
Vegans and vegetarians aren’t left out either, with options like a spinach & potato bhaji burger topped with mint and coriander chutney, served with triple-cooked chips. For dessert, our pick is the Bakewell tart with vanilla custard, but you might be tempted by Bailey’s tiramisu, coconut rice pudding, or a warm chocolate brownie with ice cream.
This dog-friendly, cosy country pub is one of our favourites in the Wiltshire countryside.
If you’re looking for a traditional Sunday pub lunch, The Boot Inn is the place to go. The portions are nice and generous and the roast meat is lovely and tender. If, like us, you enjoy a taste of everything, we recommend the “a little bit of everything” board with beef, pork belly and chicken.
We love that The Boot Inn uses local suppliers for their menu. Meat is provided by Pritchett’s Butchers and Walter Rose and Sons, fish is from Premier Fish and Druids Lodge, just steps from the pub, is used for game meat.
Standing on the edge of the Fonthill Estate, the 18th Century Beckford Arms is the perfect spot for long Sunday lunches after a countryside walk. The inn is just 20 minutes from Stonehenge or Salisbury and under two hours from London.
Their Sunday roast menu features West End Farm roast loin of pork with crackling and apple sauce or Stokes Marsh Farm roast sirloin of beef with horseradish sauce. Each comes with crispy roast potatoes, greens, chantenay carrots, beetroot, cauliflower cheese, Yorkshire pudding and a rich gravy.
Head chef Adam Bristow and his team take great pride in using local ingredients, from Wiltshire farm meats to fish from the Cornish coast. If you fancy making a night of it, the inn offers eight beautiful rooms, two luxurious lodges, and a stay in The Arch on the estate.
When The Grosvenor Arms promises a roast with all the trimmings, they really mean it!
Whether you choose Church Farm sirloin, roast partridge, slow-roast pork belly, or a nut roast, you’re in for a feast. Each plate comes loaded with roast potatoes, greens, carrot and swede mash, pigs in blankets, cauliflower cheese, giant Yorkshire puddings and gravy. You can even order extra Yorkies and potatoes at no extra charge!
If you’ve still got room for dessert, there are plenty of choices, including sticky toffee pudding, chocolate brownie, lemon posset, or rhubarb upside-down cake.
Like The Beckford Arms, The Grosvenor offers nine en-suite rooms, making it a great spot for a relaxing weekend getaway. Plus, there are plenty of scenic walks, cycle routes, and cafés nearby if you want to make the most of your visit.
