Woodgreen

The charming village of Woodgreen, in the northwest corner of the New Forest National Park, is perched on the banks of the picturesque River Avon.

It’s a thriving community, with a well-stocked community shop and Post Office, a cricket club, village hall and green, church and the popular 18th Century Horse and Groom pub.

The riverside town of Fordingbridge is just three miles away, and Salisbury, Bournemouth and Southampton are all within easy reach.

Woodgreen’s Horse and Groom pub has a great restaurant and an old-school bar – perfect for a pint before or after a long country walk – and the beautiful garden with its ‘Filly Bar’ overlooks paddocks with ponies and donkeys.

History

The ‘Wood’ of Woodgreen is Godshill Inclosure, which separates the village from the New Forest, and ‘Green’ is a common name for a secondary settlement in southern England.

The parish of Woodgreen was created in 1858, and was enlarged in 1932 with the addition of Breamore and Hale.

The village hall was built in 1930-31, and two students from the Royal School of Art were commissioned by the Carnegie Trust to decorate the walls with murals showing scenes from village life, including folk dancing, the village flower show, making cider, and poachers looking down from Castle Hill.

The village church of St Boniface dates from 1913 and was originally a church reading room.

Walking and cycling

Its enviable location in the New Forest National Park, makes Woodgreen a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with endless opportunities for adventure.

The forest is crisscrossed with a network of walking, cycling, and horseriding trails that wind through ancient woodlands, open heathlands, and picturesque villages. Wildlife enthusiasts will delight in spotting deer and roaming New Forest ponies as well as beautiful butterflies and birds.

The River Avon, running along the edge of Woodgreen, is perfect for peaceful riverside walks, and those looking for something more active will love the nearby New Forest Water Park for activities like wakeboarding, paddleboarding, and kayaking.

The village green itself is a great spot for picnics on a leisurely afternoon.
