Nunton

Nunton is a picturesque village in the heart of Wiltshire, surrounded by beautiful countryside, but only two and a half miles from Salisbury’s amenities, culture, and excellent grammar, state and independent schools. The parish includes the small village of Bodenham, just half a mile to the east.

Nunton lies on the River Ebble, a sparkling chalk stream that is a tributary of the River Avon. The river provides a peaceful setting for walking, fishing and picnicking, and it supports a rich variety of wildlife, including trout, kingfishers and otters.

Just north of Bodenham is the Longford Castle estate, seat of the Pleydell-Bouverie family, Earls of Radnor. On the estate is a fantastic 15th Century thatched pub The Radnor Arms, perfectly positioned for a good dog walk after a sumptuous dinner.

Nunton Farm Dairy is next door to the Radnor Arms, and from here you can buy farm fresh whole milk from a vending machine. It also hosts working farm days for the public.

The annual Ebble Fest fete brings together elements of the traditional village summer fete and a music festival, with stalls, children’s entertainment and a wide variety of music. Attractions include tractor trailer rides and a medieval village.

History

Nunton’s name is believed to be derived from the Old English Nunntūn, which translates to ‘the farmstead of the nuns’.

Nunton and Bodenham were a tithing of Downton parish before transferring to Odstock parish in 1934.

At the heart of the village is St. Andrew’s Church, a beautiful parish church with roots in the medieval period. It was rebuilt in the mid 19th Century and has a window by the English stained glass designer Christopher Webb.

Walking and cycling

For those who enjoy walking and outdoor pursuits, Nunton is surrounded by a network of footpaths and bridleways that criss-cross the countryside, providing access to some of the most beautiful and unspoiled landscapes in Wiltshire.

Popular routes include walks along the River Ebble and hikes to Clearbury Ring, an Iron Age hillfort that offers stunning views across the valley.

Cyclists will also find plenty to enjoy, with quiet country lanes and challenging off-road trails that cater to all levels of ability.
