Hamptworth
Hamptworth is a pretty hamlet in Wiltshire on the border with Hampshire in the New Forest National Park. It has thatched cottages, country homes and contemporary stunners, all set against an amazing landscape over woodlands, heath and rolling pastures, with the River Blackwater flowing through it.
The Hamptworth Golf & Country Club has a clubhouse open to the public and an outdoor terrace with spectacular views across the greens. As well as a great course, with one of the UK’s only Par 6 at 666 Yards called ‘The Beast’, there’s also croquet and tennis. There’s even a restaurant open to the public for breakfast, lunch, brunch – or a Sunday roast.
The village has a popular, quirky, thatched pub, The Cuckoo Inn, with a lovely beer garden and a programme of events including car and bike meets and beer and cider festivals. It dates back to the early 18th Century and is tucked down a winding country lane.
The historic Hamptworth Estate, a Jacobean style manor house surrounded by 3,000 acres of parkland and gardens, is now a wedding venue.
Local bus services are provided by operators, Salisbury Reds and Wilts & Dorset.
History
The origins of the village can be traced back to medieval times when The New Forest itself was created by William the Conqueror as his royal hunting ground. It’s believed that Hamptworth developed over time to support that.
The name ‘Hamptworth’ is believed to come from the Old English ‘ham’ meaning homestead, and ‘worth’ meaning enclosure or farmstead.
