Charlton All Saints

Traditional thatched cottages from the 17th and 18th Centuries are scattered through the small hamlet of Charlton-All-Saints in south Wiltshire.

The charming village is just 1.5 miles away from Downton and four miles from the medieval city of Salisbury, and lies close to the beautiful River Avon, which flows along the western edge of the village.

The Avon is known for its clear waters and rich biodiversity, making it a popular spot for fishing, birdwatching, and walking, with the riverside paths offering picturesque views of the water and surrounding meadows.

For a small village, there is a strong community spirit, and various annual events include the village barbecue, Harvest supper, Bonfire Bash and Downton Band Concert.

For everyday needs, residents can visit the nearby village of Downton, which offers a range of shops, Post Office, pubs, school, butcher, GP surgery and dentist.

History

Charlton-All-Saints has a rich history that dates to at least the medieval period.

The name Charlton is derived from the Old English words ‘ceorl’ (meaning a free peasant) and ‘tun’ (meaning a farm or settlement), suggesting that the village originated as a small farming community.

The addition of All Saints to the village name is a likely reference to the parish church of All Saints, which has been a central feature of the village for centuries.

By 1208, Charlton was a tithing of the Downton parish, and in the 14th Century, it was a thriving farming community.

The church was designed by the distinguished architect Thomas Henry Wyatt in the plain Early English style, and was consecrated in 1851. The font is by William Butterfield, and there are two beautiful stained glass windows.

The worn pews were removed from the nave more than 30 years ago, leaving a flexible open plan space used for many community events, including the village barbecue, talks and slideshows.

Walking and cycling

Charlton-All-Saints’ stunning rural location makes it a haven for walkers and cyclists, and the Avon Valley Path passes through the village. Try the Downton to Charlton-All-Saints Circular, with beautiful views of the river and weir.
