We’re lucky to have some brilliant dog-friendly walks right on our doorstep, suitable for dogs who love to tear around a field or just trot along beside you.
Here are a few of our top picks that both you and your pup will enjoy, all within 20 miles of Salisbury.
If your dog loves woodland walks and wide, open spaces, Grovely Wood is a great place to explore. It’s just outside of Wilton and offers miles of paths and trails that are perfect for dogs to run around off the lead. You’ll walk through tall trees, quiet glades and open tracks – and it’s rarely busy, even on the weekends, so it’s ideal if your dog prefers a bit of space.
Parking is easy along the track or just before you reach the woods. There’s a small car park on Grovely Road to the south west of Great Wishford.
This peaceful nature reserve, owned by the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust is ideal if you’re after a gentler walk. Dogs need to stay on the lead here, but it’s still a lovely place to take them. There’s a clear circular route that takes you past lakes and meadows, and it’s a great spot for birdwatching if that’s your thing. It’s calm, scenic and there’s also a small café on site (open Wednesday to Sunday) where you can grab a drink and a snack before heading home. The Kingfisher Café opens at 10am and closes at 3:30pm.
There is an on-site car park – just follow signs for The Langfords from the A36. In Steeple Langford turn into Duck St and the reserve entrance is on the left once you have crossed the river.
Right on the edge of Salisbury, the historic Old Sarum is a popular with local dog walkers. The main path around the ancient hillfort gives you amazing views across the city and cathedral. Dogs are allowed in the castle on a lead and off the lead on the outer bailey. The open grassland means you can keep an eye on them easily.
It’s a simple circular walk, great for all ages and abilities and it’s especially nice in the early morning or evening when the sun’s low over the hills.
The car park is on a slight slope on the outer bailey, approximately 200 metres from the shop and admission point.
If you fancy something a bit quieter and more scenic, head over to the Fonthill Estate. The walk around Fonthill Lake is really beautiful – think still water, tree-lined paths and plenty of birds and wildlife. It’s fairly flat and easy to follow, so ideal for a leisurely stroll.
Dogs can be off-lead in many parts, and there’s lots of variety to keep it interesting. Afterwards, you could stop at The Beckford Arms, a lovely dog-friendly pub just up the road.
