Find out moreOur patch has more than its fair share of fantastic places to eat and drink, but the 14th Century pub at Lower Chicksgrove in the Nadder Valley, is one of those specials worth searching out.
Even the search for The Compasses Inn is worth the effort – deep in a maze of narrow lanes carving through rolling Wiltshire countryside and past picture postcard perfect villages, it’s the quintessential English country pub experience.
A thatched roof, wonky dark oak beams, ancient flagstones and high-backed settle benches and of course, in the colder months, flickering candlelight and a blazing fire in an inglenook hearth.
The menu changes daily and relies heavily on seasonal ingredients, and there are fantastic local ales and a good choice of wines.
You’ll find starters such as: smoked haddock and cider rarebit with a soft boiled egg and mustard cress salad; and grilled bavette steak with Asian slaw with chilli and lime dressing and peanut sauce. Then try the roast skate wing with lemon and caper beurre noisette or grilled beefburger with Ogleshield cheese, tomato, gherkin and chips from the special ‘pub’ selection. There’s plenty of meat-free choice too with chilled cucumber, yoghurt and dill soup, tomato concasse, or chargrilled hispi cabbage, pickled red onions, butterbean puree, chilli oil and pangrattato.
Traditional English puds with a modern twist include sticky apricot, date and walnut pudding with clotted cream, rice pudding with chocolate and amaretto sorbet, Bakewell tart, and hot chocolate pudding.
If you fancy sampling their ales and wine with dinner there are four stylish rooms above the inn and the three-bed Plum Cottage in the grounds. Perfect for a place to stay while you search for your new home!
