Charter market at Salisbury

If you love a traditional English market, then Salisbury Charter Market is definitely worth a visit.

It’s not huge – and it is outdoors so sometimes you have to brave the elements, but it has the feel of markets as they used to be.

Every Tuesday and Saturday for the best part of the day, it’s busy and bustling, there are the smells of hog roasts and bacon sandwiches and all around the Square are pubs and cafés serving espressos, hot chocolates and ice-cold ciders depending on the time of year.

It’s a foodie’s delight with home-made breads and cakes, olives, honey, farm eggs, cheeses, meats and fresh fish. The fruit and veg is exceptional – and ‘yell it and sell it’ always makes me smile.

At the centre is the farmer’s market, marked by its blue and white stalls, selling produce which is locally grown or produced – smoked trout, Scotch eggs and local wines and ales, seasonal specialities, asparagus, cheese, quiche and a host of other produce.

For the gardener, there are at least two garden stalls which sell exceptional plants at very cheap prices, and the charity stall at the edge of the market often has an amazing garden offering as well.

The people of Salisbury clearly love their four-legged friends and there’s a large stall for pet bits – so we even venture round with our two boisterous beagles, kept of course on a very short lead or they would devour every piece of food in the square.

You can find our more about the Salisbury Charter Market at Fish Row from Visit Wiltshire or from the market website.
