Larkhill

Larkhill, just a stone’s throw from Stonehenge, is a garrison town which has long links with British military and is today still one of the main garrisons on Salisbury Plain.

The town is close to the A303, less than a 30-minute drive from the cathedral city of Salisbury with its shops, bars, restaurants, heritage, culture and travel connections. Trains to London from Salisbury take less than 90 minutes. Salisbury Reds operates a bus route in the town.

Before the military garrison was established, the area was known as Lark Hill, part of Durrington Down. After the first military buildings were established, it came to be known as Larkhill Camp.

The Royal School of Artillery is at Larkhill and the Royal Artillery has its barracks here.

This heritage of Larkhill has made for a strong sense of community and there are lots of events happening all year round, a village fête, Christmas market, and summer BBQs, as well as May Day and fireworks night.

The village has a local shop and post office, a GP surgery and pre-school nursery. There’s also Larkhill Primary school. Larkhill Racecourse offers a Point-to-Point course in the spectacular setting of Salisbury Plain, considered one of the best courses of its kind in the UK.

History

There’s evidence of Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements at Larkhill including ancient barrows and remnants of Roman roads.

But its more recent history has been dictated by its location to Salisbury Plain and its military connections. The village played a significant role during both World Wars, serving as a training ground for troops and a base for military operations. The Royal School of Artillery was established in the village at the end of WWI and is still based here today.
