Haxton

Haxton is one of three small villages nestled together next to the River Avon on the fringes of Salisbury Plain.

Haxton, Netheravon and Fittleton share a village shop and Post Office, pub, primary school, village hall, community library and a local brewery.

The bustling market town of Amesbury lies about five miles south of the village, offering a wide range of day-to-day amenities, including GP and dental surgeries.

In neighbouring Netheravon, the recently restored 17th Century coaching Inn The Dog & Gun is a thriving village local where you’ll find nods to the pub’s history dotted throughout the bar and restaurant.

Families can send their young children to Netheravon All Saints Primary School – just half  a mile away in the next village – and they are also a half-hour’s drive from Salisbury’s good secondary, state, independent and grammar schools.

Stonehenge Ales is one of Wiltshire’s oldest microbreweries, and was established in 1984 in the Old Mill, a Grade II listed building used as an electricity generator for the Netheravon Airfield in 1914. Today it brews traditional English cask ale using the finest quality Stonehenge spring water.

Haxton shares a village hall with Fittleton, and there is a strong sense of community binding the two villages.

History

The village’s name has Old English roots, possibly meaning ‘settlement on a hook-shaped piece of land’. Haxton Down has a group of bowl barrows and a long barrow on the western side of Weather Hill, and there is evidence that the village was larger and more prosperous than Fittleton in the Middle Ages. There are still some historic buildings remaining in the village, including some from the 17th Century.

Walking and cycling

Haxton’s enviable location close to the River Avon and the wider Pewsey Vale, means residents have easy access to beautiful walking routes, scenic views, and opportunities for outdoor activities like fishing, birdwatching, and photography.
